Digital tools have become a key driver in the transition toward a sustainable development model, as they enable accurate collection, analysis, and use of data in real time. Through technologies such as sensors, “smart” networks, and data analytics platforms, businesses and public organizations can monitor energy consumption, identify inefficiencies, and implement targeted interventions. Moreover, they enhance transparency and accountability, which are essential for sustainable governance. The effective use of these tools leads to more efficient resource management and significantly contributes to reducing environmental impact.

 In what ways does Artificial Intelligence enhance sustainability practices?

Artificial Intelligence enhances sustainability through its ability to process large volumes of data and identify complex patterns. In the energy sector, for example, it can forecast demand and optimize energy production and distribution, reducing losses. In agriculture, it enables the “smart” use of water and fertilizers, while in transportation it helps optimize routes and reduce fuel consumption. At the same time, it is used to monitor climate change and predict natural phenomena, strengthening prevention and the resilience of societies.

What are the main challenges or risks associated with the use of these technologies?

Despite their significant benefits, there are also challenges that cannot be overlooked. The increasing reliance on digital infrastructure leads to high energy consumption, particularly from data centers and AI systems. In addition, ethical and governance issues arise, such as data privacy, algorithm transparency, and the risk of unequal access to technology. To fully harness the benefits, a strong regulatory framework and strategic planning are required to ensure that technological progress aligns with sustainability principles.

How do you see the relationship between technology and sustainability evolving in the coming years?

This relationship is expected to become even closer and more decisive. Technology will continue to act as a catalyst for sustainable development, with a focus on more efficient and “green” systems. Artificial Intelligence, combined with other technologies such as the Internet of Things and big data, will enable the development of integrated solutions for cities, industry, and the environment. However, the key factor will be responsible use of these technologies, aiming not only at economic growth but also at ensuring social and environmental balance.
